In today's world there are many translations of God's Word. For someone new to God's word it can be an overwhelming decision. The first thing to do before choosing a bible is pray to the Lord for guidance. It is best to choose a direct translation from the original Greek and Hebrew. Below are just a few translations and sample verses. This is just a guide to help. Again pray to the Lord and He will lead you in the right direction.
KJV (King James Version)
John 4:7 - There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give Me to drink.
NKJV (New King James Version)
Hebrews 9:11 - But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater more perfect tabernable not made with hands, that is, not of the creation.
NIV (New International Version)
Acts 13:47 - For this is what the Lord has commanded us: "I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth."
NASB (New American Standard Bible)
Matthew 3:17 - and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
NLT (New Living Translation)
1 Corinthians 16:56 - For sin in the sting of death and the law gives sin it's power.
This is just a few samples to give you an idea of how each translation is written.
Be careful when asking for advice on how to make your choose. There are a few die hards that believe their chosen translation is the only one accepted by God. I believe that God has allowed all of these translations for a reason, and it isn't to confuse you or lead you astray. As stated above, try to go with a direct translation. Some bible translators take more liberty than they should.
For those that believe the King James Version is the only version God accepts, this is wrong and false teaching. I've personally gone to God wanting to find specifics to a situation. While I have used both the NIV and NKJV, God in His greatness showed me in His Word what I needed to find. God's Word is perfection from the second it was breathed into being. It wasn't perfected in the King James Version. It was merely translated.
